:jesus:

Aside from Ducati, which uses its Desmodromic valve system, Honda is now the only MotoGP manufacturer not to use pneumatic valve actuation, although Repsol Honda team manager Kazuhiko Yamano recently defended the decision.

"Our job is to provide a machine that is capable of winning. It doesn't matter what valves it uses, whether pneumatic or standard," he said. "We try to produce machines that win races, and continue to work on both options to meet this goal."

Honda HRC test rider Tadayuki Okada is to race the Japanese factory's experimental pneumatic-valve engine in the Italian MotoGP round at Mugello on June 1.

The sensational news about one of the most talked-about motors in MotoGP was announced at Le Mans today when a wild-card entry for Okada, 41, was finally confirmed for the Italian event, the next one on the calendar.

Repsol Honda factory riders Dani Pedrosa and Nicky Hayden have relied on existing valve-spring engines this year while Okada has conducted extensive on-track tests in Japan on the pneumatic-valve motor to prove its power and reliability.

Rival Japanese makers Suzuki, Kawasaki and Yamaha already use pneumatic technology, but Pedrosa has demonstrated this year that his valve-spring bike remains competitive, and leads the MotoGP championship from Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi on Fiat Yamahas.

But Honda clearly feel that their new engine will now perform honourably in public. Pedrosa and Hayden will race the pneumatic version when HRC finally clear it for their use.

Okada competed in 115 grand prix races between 1989-2000, winning four of them. He remains a highly competitive rider, finishing fourth in the Suzuka Eight Hour race in 2006, and second, with Carlos Checa as co-rider, in 2007.
